ISD 10 years - Education for life, with a focus on transforming reality and social impact

Connecting minds, transforming lives

The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) is a Social Organization (OS) linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC) located in the city of Macaíba, in Rio Grande do Norte.

ISD works in the areas of maternal and child health, health of people with disabilities, neuroscience and neuroengineering.

Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS)

With a focus on translational research, IIN-ELS is a teaching and research center in the areas of neuroscience and neuroengineering, developing studies mainly in the areas of Neuromodulation and Brain-Machine Interface. Since 2013, it has offered the first Master's Degree in Neuroengineering in Brazil, authorized by CAPES.

Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (Anita)

Part of the Unified Health System (SUS), Anita operates as a school for health professions, developing actions that range from undergraduate courses to continuing education. It is a reference service for multidisciplinary care for maternal and child health and people with disabilities in Rio Grande do Norte.

The ISD has recently improved the procedures and standards for access to its open laboratories and has outlined the research facilities that best differentiate the region. Thus, four major laboratory areas have been listed: Human Electrophysiology; Microscopy; Neuroengineering (including Neuroprosthetics) and Neurorehabilitation (ZeroG, Gymnasium).

The recent activation of a new power substation will allow the installation of new neurorehabilitation and clinical research laboratories, the creation of a prosthetics and orthotics workshop, in addition to the expansion of existing laboratories.

Neuroscience and
neuroengineering

The main research areas of the ISD are Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) and Neuromodulation. In the postgraduate course, the central theme is neuroengineering, an interdisciplinary research area that integrates neuroscience and engineering methods to study the functioning and develop solutions for dysfunctions associated with the nervous system.

Teaching, research and
extension

ISD has the distinction of carrying out translational research, which begins with basic science and ends with the practical application of the knowledge learned.

The Program was designed to overcome barriers between degrees in exact, biological and human sciences.

The Santos Dumont Institute offers Brazil's first free master's degree in Neuroengineering and the only Multiprofessional Residency program in Health Care for People with Disabilities in Brazil.

Extension activities are focused on the treatment of neurogenic bladder and bowel and prenatal care for quilombola communities.

Care Lines

ISD healthcare is provided through lines of care. These are made up of multidisciplinary teams focused on offering specialized care with an integrated approach to the user and their health condition, filling gaps in the care provided to newborns. These are:

  • Early Identification and Stimulation Ambulatory
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Adult Spinal Cord Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury in Children and Adolescents
  • Microcephaly
  • Prematurity
  • neurodevelopment
  • Neurogenic bladder
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Epilepsies
  • Pharmacoresistant
  • Hearing Health
  • visual health
  • parasport

Health Care Work

The Santos Dumont Institute offers several practical scenarios for academic activities and mandatory curricular internships for courses in the health area and related fields, relating health care and research activities and integrating teaching, service and community.

The work is carried out via the SUS and includes the areas of high-risk prenatal care; Infectious Diseases during pregnancy; Specialized Assistance Service for children living with HIV/AIDS; fetal medicine; Early Identification and Stimulation Outpatient Clinic and the Specialized Rehabilitation Center IV, which works with the rehabilitation of people with physical, visual, hearing and intellectual disabilities.

Maternal and child health

In almost a decade of operation as an outpatient reference center for the SUS in RN, Anita's activities include:
  • High-risk prenatal care;
  • Specialized assistance for pregnant women and children with HIV/AIDS;
  • Multidisciplinary care service for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD);
  • Infectology in pregnancy;
  • Fetal medicine;
  • Nursing in Women's Health and Children's Health
