Students from the Scientific Education Center (CEC) in Serrinha-BA were, on September 20, at the Federal Institute of Bahia (IF Baiano), Campus Serrinha. The purpose of the visit was to show the structure of the IF, the courses offered and talk about the 2018.1 selection process, which receives applications until October 9th. In all, 25 students from the four CEC Serrinha workshops, who attend the 9th grade of elementary school in public schools, were present at the visit.
Valeria Sampaio, an administrative technician at the IF and a member of the Selection Process Committee, welcomed the CEC students along with two other colleagues from the Committee. Bruna Costa, a former CEC Serrinha student and current IF student, also went to welcome the visitors. The IF team presented the Institution and its work proposal and then the visitors were guided to know the space: library, cafeteria and biology, cytology and chemistry laboratories. During the visit, CEC students were able to observe some illustrative slides in the microscopes, as well as the polluted water analysis work that was being carried out at that time. The visit ended with a demonstration of the IF's vegetable garden system, where practical classes for the Agroecology and Agriculture courses are held.
The pedagogical coordinator of CEC Serrinha, Joseane Souza, stated that some students were happy to find work similar to the ones they develop at the CEC Serrinha Science and Environment Workshop at the IF Baiano, such as observation under microscopes and analysis of polluted water: “We intend to better guide our students regarding the courses they will follow in high school. Every year we dialogue with them talking about the possibilities after leaving the CEC. In 2017, one of the actions was this visit to the IF Baiano, as most of our students did not know the Institution, which is new here in the city and has a work that stands out. Currently, we have ten former CEC students studying at IF Baiano”, explained Joseane.
The student Eva Maria Mota Silva, from the Science and Technology and Science and Environment workshops, commented that he found it very beautiful to observe the importance that people from the IF Baiano give to nature. She pointed out that she liked the way visitors were treated.
Also a member of the Science and Technology and Science and Environment workshops, the student Janaina Silva do Patrocínio said: “What I found very important was knowing how they use the laboratories to do research, not only for themselves, but also for the city and for other places, bringing results of their own research”. And, finally, the student of the Science and Technology and Science and Environment workshops, Adriane Marques Santos, shared his impressions saying: “I found the visit very interesting. Everyone who arrives, they welcome and pay a lot of attention to the students. And about knowledge, they transmit it very well, because it is a form that we can understand and can also pass on to everyone”.
