Parkinson's disease is the second largest neurodegenerative disorder in the world, behind only Alzheimer's. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that approximately 1% of the world population aged 65 and over suffers from Parkinson's. In Brazil, around 200 thousand people live with the disease, which has no cure.
Thinking about offering greater awareness about the disease and demystifying Parkinson's, the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) On April 27th, they held recreational activities open to the public interested in the topic. The program included a conversation with health professionals, a game of myths and truths about Parkinson's, simulation of some motor symptoms and physical activities, including walking in the area.
The activities were conducted by a team, multidisciplinary residents and patients from the Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (CEPS) together with master's students in neuroengineering from Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), as well as professionals and students from UFRN. The action took place in the month in which World Parkinson's Disease Day is celebrated, celebrated annually on April 11th.
