The Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences, from the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), surpassed the mark of 1 thousand 'shield masks' produced for donation to hospitals, maternity wards and urgent and emergency services in Rio Grande do Norte.
In around three weeks, the Institute's production met the demand of 47 health units facing Covid-19, the new coronavirus, in the state. Masks are considered essential to protect healthcare professionals, but – due to high demand with the disease affecting the world – they are missing on the market. Those produced at ISD have so far reached a total of 15 municipalities.
At the head of the Institute's production line are researchers and students from master's degree in neuroengineering, the first in Brazil in this area of knowledge.
The work began in mid-March and there is no end date.
'Shield masks', also called 'face shields', use acetate as raw material and have a support made with plastic filament produced in 3D printers.
The mold was assembled based on the opinion of doctors and nurses to ensure the safety and comfort of the professionals who will use them.
The donation is institutional, that is, it is not made directly from ISD to individuals or professionals. It is the director of the interested institution who should contact the Institute (by email covid19@isd.org.br).
The Santos Dumont Institute is a Social Organization linked to the Ministry of Education.
