The Minister of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC), Marcos Pontes, visited the Cérebro Campus, in Macaíba (RN), on Saturday, August 10, when he got to know the facilities and laboratories of Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS).
During the visit, the Minister was received by the Board of Directors of ISD, in addition to Professors-Researchers and Master's Students in Neuroengineering at IIN-ELS, who presented some works developed in the areas of Neuromodulation and Brain-Machine Interface. Pontes heard about the translational research carried out in Macaíba, that is, research that starts at the bench and reaches its application in reality. And, like a good astronaut, he was amazed by the Zero G equipment, available in the Neurorehabilitation laboratory, which simulates zero gravity and helps with the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries or motor difficulties.

The Director General of ISD, Reginaldo Freitas Junior, explained to the Minister how the Institution develops actions that contribute to the social development of the region through work in the areas of education, research in neurosciences and neuroengineering, maternal and child health and people with disabilities: “We have a Management Contract with the Ministry of Education and we identified in MCTIC a partner that can add to our work in science and technology, education and health. Our Board of Directors has a representative from this Ministry and we feel that this representation must also be reflected in our Management Contract”, he said.
Also participating in the visit to the Campus do Cérebro were members of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), led by the Rector José Daniel Diniz Melo, in addition to authorities from Macaíba, including the Mayor Fernando Cunha and the Deputy Mayor Auri Simplício and also the Vice-President of the Fecomércio System, Luiz Lacerda.
