The researcher Manuela Sales<\/strong> and the master's student in neuroengineering Amanda Salmeron<\/strong> represented the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN-ELS) as speakers at the I Immunology Summer Course<\/strong>, which took place between July 8 and 12, at the Biosciences Center of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN)<\/a>. The field of Immunology is considered strategic, as the immune system is interconnected and influences several other functions of the human body. UFRN's extension action had the contribution of professionals with experience in the subjects that were covered, including professors and postgraduate students.<\/p>

On the occasion, Manuela addressed the topics \u201cVaccines \u2013 from variolation to the post-genomic era\u201d<\/strong> It is \u201cImmunotherapy \u2013 Advances and perspectives\u201d<\/strong>, and Amanda explained about \u201cToday\u2019s anti-vaccine movements\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The master's student has worked with immunology since she was a Scientific Initiator during her undergraduate degree in biotechnology and continues to work in the area during her postgraduate studies. \u201cFor those who choose an academic career, the lectures, short courses and classes end up being consequences of the work developed, because we need to present this to the community. It is an essential experience for anyone who wants to follow this path\u201d, she explains about the relevance of offering a lecture on the UFRN course.<\/p>

Manuela highlights the relevance of the topics covered: \u201cImmunotherapy is considered a major scientific advance for the treatment of allergies, autoimmunity and especially cancer. It is also a great example of translational science\u201d, explains the researcher about this area combining basic research, which begins on the bench, and ends as an application in people's reality.<\/p>

The course was offered by the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at UFRN and its target audience was undergraduate students in the health and biological areas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
