Researcher Edgard Morya, from the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), in Maca\u00edba (RN), is one of the confirmed speakers for a conference organized by Nature, the largest scientific publication in the world. The event, which takes place on November 13th at Vanderbilt University, in the United States, has the theme: \u201cBioengineering for global health\u201d. Morya is manager of the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), one of the two units of ISD, where the first Postgraduate Program in Neuroengineering in Brazil operates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The conference aims to promote the most current research related to health innovation, focusing on low-cost diagnostic technologies, financing and publications related to bioengineering research, education training to advance global health, disease prevention capacity and public health policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Professor Edgard Morya will share the stage with speakers from the United States, China and India, sharing local experiences that apply a broad and global vision to develop research and studies in their respective areas. A physiotherapist by training, Morya has a PhD in Human Physiology from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP) and has worked at ISD since its foundation. He is a member of the Technical-Scientific Council of the Augusto Severo Scientific and Technological Park (PAX | RN) and the State Council of Science, Technology and Innovation of RN (CONECITI)<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cA very important particularity about the research carried out in the health area at ISD and in Brazil is the opportunity to contribute to the SUS\u201d, explains the researcher. \u201cThis allows researchers to think from the beginning about developing low-cost technologies with social impact, directly related to the real problems and demands of the population, something that does not exist everywhere in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

At ISD, part of the translational studies developed in the master's degree in Neuroengineering have the demands of the population met at the institution's Specialized Rehabilitation Center (CER) as a starting point. This applies both to the development of low-cost technologies for rehabilitation, such as orthoses and prosthetics, and to the validation of new protocols and therapies based on scientific evidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cSharing what we do in Rio Grande do Norte with the rest of the world is an opportunity to show that Brazil, despite still having a long way to go in terms of promoting and valuing scientific research, has a lot to contribute to bioengineering global\u201d, adds the researcher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
