Posted in November 3, 2022

The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) hosted this Thursday, the 3rd, the first extraordinary meeting of the Augusto Severo Scientific and Technological Park (PAX). On that occasion, the composition of the institution's technical-scientific council, responsible for defining and implementing the park's strategic policies, was made official.

The event was attended by the governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fátima Bezerra, the general director of ISD, Reginaldo Freitas Júnior, the director-president of PAX, Olavo Bueno, the president of the PAX board of directors, Ângela Paiva, as well as the secretary of infrastructure, Gustavo Rosado, and the state secretary of economic development, Sílvio Torquato. In October, the ISD also hosted the constituent assembly that approved the statute and defined the members of the park's fiscal and management councils.

In her greeting speech, Fátima Bezerra highlighted the importance of the technological center for the development of Rio Grande do Norte. “Today I celebrate with you the realization of a dream. It is a fundamental step towards achieving what we want: a civilized world, supported by sustainability and social inclusion. As a state, we need to advance in the areas of technology and education. With this park, we confirm our capacity for innovation”, said the governor.

After the assembly, Fátima Bezerra visited the PAX and ISD facilities, accompanied by general director Reginaldo Freitas Júnior and the governor's delegation.

Representatives of the partner institutions that will be part of the institution's technical-scientific council were also present at the assembly: the city councils of Macaíba, São Gonçalo, Parnamirim and Natal; RN Research Support Foundation (Fapern); Foundation to Support Education and Technological Development of Rio Grande do Norte (Funcern); Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN); University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN); Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA); Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of RN (IFRN); Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (Fiern), Support Service for Micro and Small Companies of Rio Grande do Norte (SEBRAE/RN) and Fecomércio RN.

For ISD, the committee members will be the IIN-ELS manager, Edgard Moyra, and research professor Fabrício Brasil. “We hope to bring contributions that can boost the growth of PAX and science, research and innovation in Rio Grande do Norte. It is a partnership that has everything to change the technological scenario in Rio Grande do Norte”, said Edgard Morya.

THE PAX

PAX will initially be structured around three areas of economic and technological vocation specific to Rio Grande Norte: energy (renewables, oil and gas); health and Industry 4.0. The headquarters building is located next to the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), one of the two ISD units in Macaíba. The center's objective is to create a favorable environment for exchanges, business and articulation of projects in the areas of health and innovation, which are areas covered by the Institute, where the first postgraduate program in Neuroengineering in Brazil is based.

According to the official schedule, PAX will start operating in the first half of 2023, after the completion of the works on the east wing, which will take place by the end of November, and the resolution of the last bureaucratic procedures, which will allow the launch of public notices attracting companies and startups interested in partnering with the institution. “The support from the state government, resources from the World Bank, the partnership with academia and other institutions, such as ISD, are fundamental for us to be here today. PAX will be the protagonist in the Rio Grande do Norte innovation ecosystem”, said Olavo Bueno, CEO of PAX.
