The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) received, this Wednesday, July 12, a visit from the General Coordinator of the Health of Persons with Disabilities area of the Ministry of Health, Arthur Medeiros, from the department's technician for the Northeast region, Cícero Kaíque, and from the State Coordinator of the Health Care Network for Persons with Disabilities of RN, Marilene Soares. On the occasion, the representatives of the Ministry were able to see rehabilitation services up close and exchange experiences on the implementation of the National Health Policy for persons with disabilities.

During the morning, representatives learned about the activities developed at ISD, a Social Organization located in the municipality of Macaíba (RN), qualified as a Specialized Rehabilitation Center IV (CER), in physical, auditory, visual and intellectual rehabilitation.

The general coordinator and the technician were at the two ISD units, the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS) and the Anita Garibaldi Center for Education and Research in Health (Anita), where they were able to learn about the teaching, research and extension activities developed in an integrated manner with health care for people with disabilities.

“It was very positive to learn about the Institute’s potential not only for providing care, but also for training professionals, which we know is what makes the difference today in providing qualified healthcare for people with disabilities. Here we see research and teaching coming together to improve healthcare, involving undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education in health… this shows our potential to transform reality through education,” highlights general coordinator Arthur Medeiros.

According to the State Coordinator of the Health Care Network for People with Disabilities in Rio Grande do Norte, Marilene Soares, the event was important for exchanging information and experiences about the services offered in Brazil. “The visit of the national coordinator makes a difference in the service. He comes to see the reality here up close and, in addition to sharing experiences and news from other places, he also takes our experience to share with other states,” she says.

In addition to working in the healthcare network for people with disabilities as a CER, ISD has also been offering, since 2018, the first Multiprofessional Residency Program in Healthcare for People with Disabilities in Brazil, which annually receives students from the areas of Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology and Social Work. “It is very important to see the possibilities for exchange and how we can contribute to strengthening the healthcare network for people with disabilities at a national level. Communication of the network via the Ministry is very important to strengthen assistance”, adds the coordinator of CER ISD (CER ISD), Camila Simão.
