The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) will promote next Monday, June 20, an orientation course for parents and caregivers of autistic children. The action is aimed at the group that is not yet included in the ISD service network and does not consist of consultation or screening. In view of the high demand, new consultations will only be held from January 2023. The course aims to prepare parents and caregivers for the correct management of the person inserted in the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Entries can be made by calling: (84) 4042-0044 / 4042 0033.
The course will have a weekly workload, totaling 20 hours of training. It will be taught by a multidisciplinary team from the ISD, coordinated by the preceptor Samantha Maranhao. “The course is aimed at parents and caregivers of children from 0 to 12 years old, with a confirmed diagnosis of Autism. To participate in the course, it is not necessary to have a medical referral”, emphasizes Samantha Maranhão.
Parents and caregivers of autistic children residing in the 7th Health Region of Rio Grande do Norte, which includes the cities of Extremoz, Macaíba, Natal, Parnamirim and São Gonçalo do Amarante, may participate. By the end of the year, three meetings will be held according to the schedule below.
Autism
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a series of conditions characterized by some degree of impairment in social behavior, communication and language, and by a narrow range of interests and activities that are unique to the individual and performed on a repetitive basis”.
Data from the US agency Center of Diseases Control and Prevention Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (CDC/ADDM), one in every 44 children worldwide is autistic. The survey proves the increase in the number of cases diagnosed over time, as this proportion has already reached 1 for every 500 children in the past. In Brazil, the numbers related to the condition are not faithful, as there is no official survey carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), for example. Current data from the CDC estimate that the condition affects 70 million people worldwide, with 2 million in Brazil.
