The students who will make up the new class of the Multiprofessional Residency in Care for People with Disabilities and the new master's students of the Neuroengineering program were introduced this Friday (1st) to the facilities of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), a Social Organization linked to the Ministry of Education, located in Macaíba/RN.
In the morning, the groups visited the Anita Garibaldi Education and Research Center (CEPS Anita) in an integrated manner, and in the afternoon, they visited the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS). Throughout the day, the students exchanged personal experiences, spoke with managers, course coordinators and staff from both units and had contact with research developed by ISD researchers.
The manager of CEPS Anita, Lilian Lisboa, welcomed the new students and spoke of her enthusiasm in receiving them at the institution. Lilian recalled that Multiprofessional Residency in Care for People with Disabilities is a pioneering postgraduate program in Brazil, with impactful results in the areas of physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychology, occupational therapy and social work.
“The work we develop here is a reference in the Unified Health System. At Anita, you will work in an integrated manner, monitoring the patient at different times, but also producing knowledge that will not be confined to a paper. What we want is for individuals, people, to be impacted by our actions,” said Lilian.
One of the new entrants to the Residency is recently graduated physiotherapist Kelly Evangelista, who decided to apply for the selection process after completing her mandatory internship at ISD. She says that, after completing her internship, she began to see the multidisciplinary experience in caring for people with disabilities in a different way. “I have always been interested in studying the neurofunctional aspect of physiotherapy. The residency came about as an opportunity to work in this area, which is not very common in the market,” she explained.
Psychologist Maria Laudeires is a graduate of the ISD scientific initiation project and now hopes to continue her master's degree in developing studies focused on memory and behavior, her areas of study. “The experience at IC was extremely interesting, as I had never seen any other place with this size and structure. One thing that really caught my attention about the Institute is how close the relationship between teachers and students is, which directly contributes to our learning and knowledge, a difference that we don't find anywhere else,” she acknowledges.
Multiprofessional Residence
The Multiprofessional Residency in Health Care for People with Disabilities has been offered by ISD since 2018. Enrolled candidates may also be allocated to Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), in accordance with the activities defined by the Residency coordination, in order to meet the teaching-research integration needs of the Santos Dumont Institute.
The ISD is a reference in maternal and child health, health for people with disabilities, neurosciences and neuroengineering. The service to the population is offered through the Unified Health System (SUS) and, at the CER, it includes people with refractory epilepsy; Parkinson's; Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); spinal cord injury; microcephaly; hearing impairment; visual impairment; prematurity and neurogenic bladder.
Master's in Neuroengineering
The Santos Dumont Institute's Postgraduate Program in Neuroengineering was the first program recognized by the Ministry of Education in this area of knowledge in Brazil. The ISD's Master's in Neuroengineering seeks to train professionals with a broad perspective, who can work in both academic and business environments (public or private), combining neuroscience with engineering.
The central theme of the course is neuroengineering, an interdisciplinary research area that integrates neuroscience and engineering methods to study the functioning of the nervous system and develop solutions for the limitations and dysfunctions associated with this system. The structure of the Program was designed to overcome the barriers that exist between undergraduate courses in exact, biological and human sciences.
About ISD
