At SNCT 2015, the Scientific Education Centers welcomed students and teachers from Partner Public Schools, the event is one of the strategies for disseminating scientific knowledge, students take on the role of monitors and present the knowledge produced and systematized by them in the workshops.
At the Natal Unit, 565 students and teachers from partner schools attended the event over the two days of visits, everyone was able to participate in the activities carried out in the workshops, with experiments, presentations and explanations by students.
In Macaíba, teachers, coordinators and directors of Public Elementary Schools I and II in the municipalities of Macaíba, Bom Jesus, Parnamirim and São José do Mipibu, participated in the event. Over the two days, there was an average of 900 visitors who were able to learn about experiments and participate in interactive activities in the 04 workshops. Students from the Future Scientists Project – INCEMAQ also participated in the SNCT, presenting the activities they carry out at the Research Center.
At the Scientific Education Center of Serrinha – BA, 956 students and 63 teachers from 18 Partner Public Schools visited SNCT during the two days and were able to learn about experiments and interactive activities developed by the students.
Director Maelia Pinheiro do Nascimento, from Escola Municipal Auta de Sousa, municipality of Macaíba, participated in the event and gave the following statement:
“I'm loving everything. I really enjoyed the work presented in the workshops. I saw a lot of cool and interesting things here. I liked the Science and Art workshop with photo-animation and how they put together this work, using so many photos. I liked the historical part that I saw at the Science and History Workshop, which featured women, their rights, especially the poet Auta de Souza, who is from Macaíba. Very good! Everyone is to be congratulated. I see that this work is very important, their daily life, here and there at our school, has helped a lot in their learning, but there is an important side here, they see the content more time and the activities are implemented more easily. You have more opportunity and time to work on the concrete and this is a benefit for them and for us too, because when they return to our school they improve their performance”.

CONTENT PRESENTED BY THE WORKSHOPS
Science and Biology
- Fungi and Bacteria:
Visitors were able to view bacteria and fungi on glass plates, identifying them in their daily lives. The students highlighted the importance of microorganisms in our body, warning us to be careful with soaps that eliminate 99% bacteria from the body.
- Dictatorship of Beauty
Using a video, the students discussed the media's imposition on beauty standards, valuing our Brazilian diversity.
- Protozoa
Visitors learned how to wash fruits and vegetables properly to avoid the presence of protozoa that can cause some common childhood illnesses such as amoeba and giardia.
- Soils (flooding)
Visitors observed the soils through stereoscopic magnifying glasses, analyzing their characteristics and relating them to flooding and possible solutions to this problem.
- Photosynthesis
Through an experiment, the students showed the importance of light for our lives.
- vegetable garden
Visitors were able to see how to create a vegetable garden at home using recycled material and learn about precautions to have a healthier life by getting rid of pesticides.
Science and Communication
- Photographic exhibition:
Various perspectives on Americanization in Natal. The work addressed the theme of image and representation based on the historical elements that constitute the collective imagination, in this case about the period of the Second World War in Natal. Some fundamentals of photography were also presented, especially the control of light that involves the camera mechanisms, represented by “aperture, speed and ISO”.
- Video report on the American presence in Natal in the 1940s:
The work relates the history and memory of people who lived in Natal in the 1940s, as well as the consequences of this fact today. Furthermore, the characteristics of a video report and its conception were presented, from the production of the script, filming and editing.
- “Memes” and textual productions about the current situation of North American imperialism:
We address the discussion about the imperialist policy of the United States and its consequences in the formation of Brazilian identity. We present how this policy operates mainly through cultural domination that has the media as its main tool. “Memes” and texts were exposed, produced by students that criticize this issue.
Science and Physics Workshop
Several experiments were presented involving the following contents:
- Water Molecules and Physical States of Water
- Changes in the Physical States of Water
- Water Cycle
- Energy Transformations
- Darkroom/Human Eye
- Vision Problems – Lenses and Corrections
- Light and Colors (Rainbow)
- 3d glasses
Science and History Workshop
- Origins (Universe, earth, life and human beings): the role of science in the construction of knowledge and the value of hypotheses were presented.
- Patchwork Quilt: work showing recognition of one's own identity and how each person's story is interconnected with everyone else's.
- Social Network: work that sought to understand the impact of social networks today; information and interaction tool; the relationship of dependencies and excessive exposure.
Research: a survey was carried out on how visitors are using social networks.
- Which Side of the Media/Politics and Media/Industrial Capitalist Society: The objective is to understand and identify the existing power relations, the logic and functioning of our capitalist society and the role of the mainstream media within this.
- Neighborhoods: Learn about the stories of the neighborhoods and question the main needs and qualities of this place.
- Landscape Transformation: Understand and critically analyze the changes that occur in spaces over time, addressing the transformative action of man
Science and Chemistry Workshop
- Thermodynamics
We present thermodynamics content through experiments with balloons and demonstration of a heat engine, showing the transformation of thermal energy into mechanical energy.
- Electrochemistry
We present the electrochemistry content through a homemade battery made with a saline solution, showing visitors the respective currents that pass through it using the multimeter, bringing technology combined with chemistry. Furthermore, we use the voltage generated by the battery to operate a calculator and an LED.
- Kinetics
We present the content of chemical kinetics through an experiment that shows the factors that influence the speed of a reaction. The experiment was carried out by dissolving two effervescent tablets in water of different temperatures. This was how each person's reaction time was analyzed following the explosion of the effervescent firecrackers.
- Chemical reactions
We present the content showing the chemical reactions that take place in teeth. The experiment was presented using two eggs, vinegar and fluoride solution. We show the chemical reactions that take place in our teeth, represented by the egg. The eggshell and the acid in the vinegar will react, showing corrosion. In the reaction with fluoride, we show the protection that the substance provides to the eggshell, highlighting the importance of oral hygiene and the correct way to brush daily.
- Acids, Bases and pH
We present the content of acids, bases and pH, bringing some substances present in our daily lives so that visitors can identify them by their colors. The change in the color of the available substances was shown by the students talking about the differences between them and the similarities in the colors of some. We used red cabbage as an acid-base indicator and the pH of these substances was measured using an indicator paper.
