From May 15th to 18th, all students from Science Education Centers (CECs) were involved in the self-evaluation process, one of the differences of this educational project of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD).

Self-evaluations by students at CEC units in Natal (RN), Macaíba (RN) and Serrinha (BA) always occur twice a year, close to the end of each semester. During the process, they have the opportunity to express themselves about the learning they learned in the two workshops they attend, evaluating what they learned in an easier and more difficult way, always explaining the reason for their answers. Furthermore, they analyze which content learned in the CECs helped them in their daily lives and in the regular schools they attend. Finally, students observe what challenges are presented for the following semester and which they need to transform into achievements. During the self-assessment, old students are encouraged to interact with newcomers and help with the self-assessment process.

Eric dos Santos, 13 years old, is in the 7th year of elementary school and has been at CEC, Natal unit (RN), for three years, currently attending science and robotics and science and chemistry workshops. Regarding the self-evaluation process, he says: “I think it's good, because in regular schools we can't give an opinion about the school. Here it is good, because we say, it will improve and get even better in the following years when other students will enter the CECs”. Erick considers self-assessment a practice that improves himself and the school.

“In addition to self-evaluating, it is also possible to notice over time what we have improved. I was a terrible student in my assessments, because I talked a lot and I improved a lot after this self-assessment. The teachers spoke to me and I realized that what I was doing was not good”, reflects the student Nathalia Cardoso da Silva, 14 years old, 8th year elementary school student and student at CEC Natal for three years. She assesses that in the CEC workshops students can learn different content that will be taken into their daily lives. But Nathalia doesn't forget the importance of breaks: “I like breaks, because I get a lot out of talking to teachers and students. The teacher can teach us in the classroom and outside too”, she concludes.

And what are the purposes of self-assessments carried out by CEC students? Second Walter Romero Jr., pedagogical coordinator of CEC Natal, this process is very important so that the student learns to position themselves and can also reflect on the teaching and learning process experienced in Scientific Education Centers. Furthermore, student observations help to improve the functioning of CECs: “This helps management and coordination to analyze what needs to be improved, what is legal and what can be maintained. For teachers, it helps them see which contents were not so well worked on and which need to improve the next time they are offered. Or, on the other hand, which subjects were so good that they deserve to be kept.”

According to Walter, it was due to older self-evaluations that CEC Natal improved, for example, the functioning of the library. Previously, students could only read books while they were on CEC premises. Currently, the loan of literary works to those who are regularly enrolled is a common practice and was adopted because it was a recurring issue in self-assessments in the past.

After the entire self-reflection process, the educators at the pedagogical workshops read the writings and all the information is transformed into data. After organizing the aspects covered, classes receive feedback on the last days of class on topics and general concerns raised by students in self-assessments.
