Posted in May 24, 2022

One of the members of the Board of Directors of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), pediatrician José Luiz Egydio Setúbal, will take office on June 22, 2022 as the newest titular academic of the Brazilian Academy of Pediatrics (ABP). Along with 11 other directors, Setúbal is part of the ISD's highest decision-making body, which has, among other attributions, dealing with matters such as the general lines of the institution's policies, guidelines and strategies. Setúbal acts as a voluntary adviser, representing the civil entity through the organization Fundação José Luiz Egydio Setúbal – Hospital Infantil Sabará.

“I didn't pursue an academic career, I'm a pediatrician who worked for many years in hospitals and in private practice in São Paulo. But, for 20 years, I have been dedicating myself to philanthropy and actions aimed at child and adolescent health. I created a foundation that bears my name, and which has several activities in the third sector, such as teaching and research, in the context of pediatrics and child health as a whole. We took on many initiatives, such as Hospital Infantil Sabará, which is a reference in São Paulo; the launch of several publications; the elaboration of congresses; among many other actions. All of this ended up giving visibility to my work, but I always try to focus the spotlight on this institutional side”, comments physician José Luiz Setúbal who will assume Chair 29 of the ABP, whose patron is Prof. Dr. Nicholas Albano.

Currently, José Luiz Setúbal is the founder and president of the José Luiz Egydio Setúbal Foundation; vice-president of Instituto Pensi – Research and Teaching in Child Health; and chairman of the board of Associação Fundo Areguá. Between 2015 and 2017, he was provider of the Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo; and worked as a clinical pediatrician in a private practice and in several hospitals in the city of São Paulo. Today, Setúbal acts as an adviser to several institutions, including: Fundação Tide Setúbal; Alberto Santos Dumont Teaching and Research Institute; Paulista Association of Foundations; and Brotherhood of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo.

“The election of Dr. Setúbal for the Brazilian Academy of Pediatrics is a fair recognition of its unequivocal competence and dedication to the development of actions aimed at the health of children and adolescents. As a natural member of the Board of Directors of the Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa Alberto Santos Dumont, his performance has been strategic for the fulfillment of the institutional mission, as an executing body of public policies that contribute to the development of education, health and science and technology in Brazil”, emphasizes Jovan Gadioli dos Santos, managing director of ISD.
