The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) releases this Wednesday (6) the newsletter Covid-19 and Pregnancy, the result of the work developed by the Technical Assistance Committee to Combat the Pandemic COVID-19 in Rio Grande do Norte. “The goal is to ensure that this material fulfills its social function, which is to help health services improve the quality of care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period,” says ISD’s general director and one of the authors of the newsletter, Reginaldo Freitas Júnior.

The Technical Assistance Committee for Confronting the COVID-19 Pandemic was established by Ordinance of the state government on April 7 and brings together members of the Institute, in addition to the Maternal and Child Care Network, the State Emergency and Urgent Care Network and the technical teams of the Coordination of Hospitals and Reference Units/COHUR and the Health Promotion Coordination (CPS) of the State Secretariat of Public Health (Sesap/RN).
The content addresses aspects related to COVID-19 in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle, through topics that seek to meet the main demands identified in the current context of the pandemic in Rio Grande do Norte. “This is a collective construction and the result of the articulation with hospitals and maternity wards from different regions of the state, and therefore, different realities. Hence the need for these strategies to be discussed and agreed upon by different members of the women's health care network”, says Freitas Júnior.
The guidelines are not prescriptive in nature and aim to support the organization of women's health care lines, according to the reality of each health service that is part of the Rede Cegonha.

This is not the first publication on the subject with the participation of the ISD. At the end of March, the Institute's multidisciplinary team also joined a collaborative effort – made up of infectious disease doctors, obstetricians and professionals from the areas of nursing and physiotherapy – to gather and guide information for the care of pregnant women with suspected or confirmed infection by the new coronavirus.
The content was presented in the form of illustrations and produced in partnership between professionals working at the Institute, Sesap-RN and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).
The illustrations provide questions and answers involving pregnancy and breastfeeding, a proposed care flowchart and hospitalization checklist for cases related to pregnancy and Covid-19. (Click here to view and download the illustrations).
