Coronavirus: ISD explains breathing difficulties that are alert to the disease

The symptoms of COVID-19, the new coronavirus, they can be those of a common flu or have the potency of severe pneumonia.

Fever accompanied by cough, chest pain or difficulty breathing are among the possible warning signs of the disease – and People with “shortness of breath” are advised by the Ministry of Health to go to a hospital to have their case investigated and receive the care they need.

But how can we differentiate possible breathing difficulties caused by COVID-19 from those caused by other diseases? And what signs should parents or caregivers of children and other people who cannot explain what they are feeling be aware of?

The topic is addressed in this video, the first in a series prepared by preceptors and students of the Multiprofessional Residency in Health Care for Persons with Disabilities – from the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) – with guidelines for education in the context of the pandemic.

Guidelines

The debut content is based on recommendations from the Ministry of Health and the book Neonatal and Pediatric Respiratory Care: A Patient Case Method – “Neonatal and Pediatric Respiratory Care: A Patient Case Study”, in free translation – by respiratory therapy specialist and director of education and innovation at the Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center, in the United States, Julianne Perretta.

The objective, according to the ISD, is to inform the entire population, especially those served by Center for Health Education and Research Anita Garibaldi, a teaching unit of the Institute for Health Professions and a reference in specialized care for maternal and child health and people with disabilities in Rio Grande do Norte.

Anita has been operating for over 10 years in the municipality of Macaíba and serves patients exclusively through the Unified Health System (SUS). 

Through channels such as videos, booklets and folders, the teams show everything from how to identify symptoms of COVID-19, to practical changes in daily services, precautions to be adopted and integration and leisure activities for a healthy routine in times of quarantine. 

The topics were discussed and materials were developed in online meetings with multidisciplinary preceptors and residents in the areas of physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychology and social work. 

The ISD is a social organization of the federal government funded by the Ministry of Education.
