About preventable maternal mortality

The right to safe motherhood is still not effectively guaranteed for many women around the world. Death due to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum complications affects thousands of women annually and this is a serious public health problem, mainly because the majority of these deaths are completely preventable.

Maternal mortality is a complex issue that deserves an expanded discussion with the whole of society. It is necessary for everyone to understand that reducing maternal mortality is not restricted to an issue of quality of health services or a country's development, but, above all, is related to citizenship rights and, above all, must be seen as an issue of human rights.

The recharacterization of preventable maternal mortality from a health disadvantage to a social injustice must impose on governments a moral obligation to remedy this injustice, as the disrespect for values and norms reflected in constitutional laws and international human rights treaties is clear. .
