ISD participates in an international event on Zika virus and other arboviruses

A little over a year after the serious situation related to arboviruses that the country witnessed, the workshop “Smart Technology for fighting Zika-Virus Epidemics” brought together in Recife-PE, from September 10 to 13, a group of professionals from Brazil and the United Kingdom to discuss possible ways to face these public health problems.

On September 11, 2017, the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) was represented by professionals from two of its units, in different lectures: the Coordinator of Health Education Activities at the Anita Garibaldi Center for Health Education and Research (CEPS), Lilian Lisbon, spoke on the topic “Parasacral modulation for bladder dysfunctions in children and adults affected by the Zika virus”; the researcher at the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), Manuela Sales, spoke on the topic “Research on vector-borne diseases”.

“It is important to raise awareness of the issue of elimination disorders, which involve neurogenic bladder and bowel, and to discuss possible follow-up and treatments for these conditions. The event promoted discussions and potential partnerships related to assistance in combating the Zika epidemic, both in Brazil and internationally,” said Lilian.

Manuela confirms that the event was an excellent opportunity to promote new partnerships between Brazilian and British researchers: “We at ISD are already closing new research projects aimed at the population affected by Zika/Microcephaly, in collaboration with researchers from London South Bank University,” said the researcher.

O event It was carried out by the Federal University of Pernambuco, the Federal University of Sergipe and the London South Bank University-England, with support from the British Council, the Newton Fund, and the state foundations for the promotion of science and technology of Pernambuco and Sergipe, Facepe and Fapitec, respectively.
