From April 8 to 12, 2017, the event took place in Hammamet, Tunisia. World Summit on Social Accountability, a world summit on social responsibility whose motto is: “improving the impact of educational institutions on people’s health”. The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) was present at the official panel program, where health professionals from all over the world were able to exchange experiences and ideas to improve education and health systems around the world.

One of the panels hosted by ISD dealt with strategies to combat violence against women.

The ISD Director of Education and Research, Reginaldo Freitas Junior, participated in the event and made presentations on projects developed by Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (CEPS): the “Belly Project”, developed in the quilombola community of Capoeiras, in Macaíba (RN); the inclusion of the theme “obstetric violence” in undergraduate medical education at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN); and the Reference Service for Children, Adolescents and Women Victims of Sexual Violence in Macaíba, implemented in 2016 and the result of broad coordination with various sectors of society. These are successful experiences of the ISD Education for Social and Community Action Program specifically related to the central theme of the meeting held in Tunisia.

For Professor Reginaldo, the participation of the Santos Dumont Institute in this type of event is extremely important because of the opportunities for exchange and knowledge of successful experiences practiced around the world: “Attending the summit in Tunisia reaffirms the ISD’s commitment to social responsibility, whether in teaching, research or outreach, areas in which it establishes its ties with civil society. In the area of health, it is very gratifying to see that the work developed at our Institution is in line with the best practices adopted by schools internationally recognized as socially responsible. The idea is that, during their training, health professionals will increasingly develop an awareness of the commitment they need to have to building a more just and humane social reality. We need to think globally to act locally.”

The event in Tunisia was organized by The Network Towards Unity for Health (TUFH), a non-governmental organization that brings together health professionals and institutions from around the world and works in partnership with the World Health Organization. In its annual meetings held in different cities around the world, TUFH brings together innovative health care organizations, universities, educational institutions and individuals from different countries, all committed to contributing to improving health conditions in their communities.

The 2017 event concluded with the official adoption of the so-called “Tunisia Charter”, which will provide recommendations to be followed by participating schools and health services. The Global Consensus on Social Responsibility of Medical Schools will be updated based on the document agreed upon in Tunisia. Access the 2012 version of the Global Consensus in Portuguese HERE.
