Health Education is the essence of this unit at Instituto Santos Dumont (ISD) dedicated to training, to the development and the Permanent Education of health professionals. The ISD believes that investing in teaching and research in health is to contribute to a fairer and more humane transformation of the Brazilian social reality.
O Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (Anita), founded in 2008, is a great school for undergraduate students, medical and multidisciplinary residencies, professionals and researchers in the health sciences and related fields.
A education and interprofessional work in health developed at Anita seek to reorient training and the health care model from the perspective of integrality and humanization of care, valuing users and their needs as fundamental elements for strengthening the Unified Health System (SUS).
Located in Macaíba, in Rio Grande do Norte, Anita is part of the SUS as an outpatient reference service for multidisciplinary care for maternal and child health is for auditory, physical and intellectual rehabilitation and, more recently, visual, in the proposal of Community Based Education.
Health care actions are aimed exclusively at users of the Unified Health System (SUS) and appointments are made through referrals made by the Basic Health Units, following the procedures used by the Reference and Counter-reference System and by the System Regulation (SISREG).

Maternal and Child Health and People with Disabilities
A Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) is Anita's main partner for the development of integrated teaching, research and extension actions.
The articulation strategies with the Health Care Networks in the SUS, according to the priorities of the federal, state and municipal health agendas, represent the mechanism through which the ethical-political-pedagogical proposal of the ISD reaches the Permanent Education in Health.
Maternal and Child Health
In nearly a decade of acting as SUS outpatient referral center In the State of Rio Grande do Norte, CEPS activities include:
- High-risk prenatal care;
- Specialized assistance to pregnant women and children with HIV/AIDS;
- Multidisciplinary care service for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD);
- Infectology in pregnancy;
- Fetal medicine;
- Nursing in Women's Health and Children's Health;
- Pediatrics;
- Child neurology;
- Electroencephalography;
- Ultrasonography;
- Children's physiotherapy and women's health;
- Adult and child psychology;
- Clinical Laboratory.
Health of People with Disabilities
In 2016, Ordinance No. 1,430 of the Ministry of Health qualified CEPS as a Specialized Rehabilitation Center Hearing, Physical and Intellectual (CER-III).
On August 6, 2021, Ordinance Nº 1.842, signed by Minister Marcelo Queiroga, made official the change of category of the Anita Garibaldi Specialized Rehabilitation Center (CER Anita) from III to IV. From then on, in addition to rehabilitation services for hearing, intellectual and motor disabilities, CER IV Anita, operated by the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), began to serve patients with visual impairments.
The first CER IV in Greater Natal, and the second in Rio Grande do Norte, will assist patients from the 7th Health Region, which includes the municipalities of Macaíba, Natal, Parnamirim, Extremoz and São Gonçalo do Amarante. This region concentrates 1,371,945 inhabitants, which corresponds to almost 39% of the Potiguar population.
The CER managed by ISD is the first in the Northeast region to take care of the health of people with disabilities integrated into a research and innovation system, through the work developed together with the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS).
CER IV actions are organized into clinics:
- Epilepsy (child and adult);
- Parkinson's;
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD);
- Spinal Cord Injury (children and adults);
- Microcephaly;
- Hearing Impairment (children and adults);
- Prematurity;
- Neurogenic bladder.
Multiprofessional Residency in Health Care for Persons with Disabilities
O Multiprofessional Residency Program in Health Care for Persons with Disabilities, approved through the public call of the Ministry of Education, in 2017, is a pioneer in Brazil.
Offered by the Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center, it is aimed at professionals in the areas of physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychology It is social service, bringing together the areas of teaching, research and extension, strengthening both the Care Network for Persons with Disabilities in the context of the Unified Health System (SUS) and the National Plan for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - Living Without Limits Plan. In addition, the Program contemplates the interface of joint action with the Postgraduate Program in Neuroengineering of the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS).
The Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center is open from Monday to Friday (with the exception of national and local holidays), from 8 am to 5 pm.
