On February 17, representatives of Association of Children with Myelomeningocele, Hydrocephalus and Cerebral Palsy of RN, affectionately called Neurinho, visited two units of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), located in Macaíba (RN).

The first stop was at Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (CEPS), where visitors were welcomed by the multidisciplinary team in a discussion group to exchange information and experiences between the two institutions. Representatives from Neurinho spoke about the work developed by the organization since 2004 and commented on the support actions for families in the state who have cases of neurological pathologies. The Association currently serves around 200 children and their families.

At the second stop of the visit, representatives of the association were received by researchers from Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), where Edgard Morya, research coordinator, presented the projects under development, spoke about the scientific advances already observed and the horizon of possibilities for the treatment of neurological diseases.

Reginaldo saw the possibility of several fronts of interaction between the association and the areas of activity of the Santos Dumont Institute: “Neurinho’s demands are multiple, both from the point of view of prenatal, pediatric and child care for children with neurogenic bladder, as well as guidance on scientific information. They brought up, very clearly, the need for scientific information in accessible language and I think this is very much in line with what we value in the ISD’s proposed action. One thing that surprised me about the visit of the

The Association was that their demands for partnerships with us go far beyond issues related to assistance and health care for children. They also raise very strong issues related to health education, the exercise of citizenship, inclusion and public policies aimed at people with special needs. There is a lot to be done!”, said the doctor. At the end of the visit, it was agreed that the Neurinho Association will present its specific demands to the ISD, electing priorities for 2016, so that the construction of a joint work plan for cooperation between the two entities can be evaluated.
