Eight athletes-users of the parasports care line of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) participate this Saturday (27) in the Natal stage of the Paralympic Meeting. The competition is part of the national calendar of competitions organized by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) and will bring together beginner, university and high-performance athletes.
ISD athletes will compete in para-athletics and shot put. The events will take place on the athletics track and in the gymnasium of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), located on the central campus, starting at 8 am.
The event will mark the debut of student Oneiil Andrews Filho in para-athletics competitions. He will participate in the 100 and 400 meter wheelchair races and the school-level shot put. Oneiil hopes to repeat his performance at the João Pessoa/PB Meeting, held earlier this month, where he won the gold medal in the shooting sport event.
“I want to do well in my debut in athletics so that, at the end of the year, I can represent Rio Grande do Norte in the national stage of the School Paralympics, which will take place in São Paulo,” said the para-athlete, who is also participating in the ISD scientific initiation project.
In addition to Oneiil, four other athletes who use the ISD parasports care line won medals in the Belo Horizonte/MG and João Pessoa stages of the Paralympic Meeting. The expectation is that the team can repeat the performance in Natal.
The Rio Grande do Norte stage of the Meeting will feature both high-performance events and state selections for competitions organized by the CPB's Sports Development Directorate (DDE): School Paralympics, University Paralympics and Military Paralympics.
In Natal, there are 241 registered athletes competing in three sports: athletics, weightlifting and swimming. The swimming events will be held at Sesi Clube, located in the Lagoa Nova neighborhood.
