A report published on the Ministry of Education (MEC) portal – with calls on the agency's Instagram and Facebook profiles – highlighted this Thursday (14) the production of shield masks and other projects by the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) to reinforce the protection of patients and health professionals against the new coronavirus and the disease caused by it, Covid-19.
The production line for the shield masks was set up by students and researchers from the ISD master's degree in neuroengineering for donation to hospitals and other health units in Rio Grande do Norte. In just over a month, around 1,200 masks were delivered to a total of 49 institutions in the state. Another 800 are being produced. The project to develop a mechanical respirator and the creation of a type of protective cylinder for the heads of patients with Covid-19 – as a way to reduce the risk of contamination of the environment and increase the level of protection for professionals – are also mentioned by the Ministry.
In another report, published on May 8, the MEC had already highlighted the Institute's actions to guide women and health professionals on risks, doubts and care involving pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period during the new coronavirus pandemic. coronavirus.

The ISD has been in operation for over 10 years and is considered a reference in teaching, research and extension in maternal and child health, people with disabilities and in the areas of neuroscience and neuroengineering.
Its actions have been linked to the Ministry of Education since 2014 and occur in an integrated manner through its two arms: the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience and the Anita Garibaldi Center for Education and Research in Health.
The Organization is located in Macaíba (RN) and offers the first and only master's degree in neuroengineering in Brazil, as well as the Multiprofessional Residency in Health Care for People with Disabilities, also considered pioneering.
