The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) hosted professors Socorro Veloso and Maria Angela Pavan from the Department of Social Communication (Decom) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) for a roundtable discussion with the students of the Multiprofessional Residency in Healthcare for People with Disabilities (RESPCD) at the Institute.
Traditionally, the Bioethics class, taught by General director of ISD, Reginaldo Freitas JúniorThis initiative integrates the training of residents and seeks to broaden reflection on the ethical, human, and social aspects present in professional health practice. In this meeting, the discussion gained new perspectives through dialogue with the field of communication, bringing together themes such as active listening and a more sensitive dialogue.
“Knowing how to listen to life stories is essential so that the people we care for are respected as protagonists in the therapeutic process. And, increasingly, we reaffirm our commitment to this very important strategy for strengthening the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System),” highlighted Reginaldo Freitas Júnior. “It was moving to see how clearly our residents understand this need and how they value it in their professional practice.”
The aim was to promote an exchange of perspectives and experiences based on the understanding that care also involves being attentive, listening, and recognizing the uniqueness of each person. Throughout the conversation, the professors discussed how professionals, when interacting with users, can contribute to more respectful, welcoming, and attentive relationships to individual needs.
For the residency classes, the discussion also provided elements for thinking about communication as part of healthcare, in an exercise to see the user beyond diagnoses, procedures, or technical information.
The meeting reinforced the importance of integrating different areas of knowledge into health education, creating spaces for dialogue that contribute to an increasingly ethical and humanized professional practice within the life contexts of the people served by the Institute.
ISD Residence
The Institute's Multiprofessional Residency Program in Healthcare for People with Disabilities (RESPCD), a pioneering program in Brazil, is aimed at professionals in the fields of Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Education. The program integrates teaching, research, and outreach, focusing on strengthening the care network for people with disabilities within the context of the Unified Health System (SUS).
