Barriguda conquers the international community at an event in Ireland

On August 18, 2018, Reginaldo Freitas Junior, General Director of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), and Carolina Damasio, medical preceptor at ISD, received, in Limerick (Ireland), the prize of the competition “Projects that Work” promoted by Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (Faimer), an international foundation committed to improving global health through education. The award ceremony took place during the Conference The Network: Towards Unity For Health (TUFH). This year's other award winners are: Shantharam Baliga (India), Maryellen Brisbois (USA) and Mary of Peace Grebe (Argentina).

In addition, Barriguda's work presented at the event – Promoting Maternal Health in a Quilombola Community – received a diploma as the best poster at TUFH 2018. 

The multidisciplinary team that developed the poster is composed of: Alexsandra Cassiano (ISD), Ana Karla Freitas (UFRN), Carolina Barreto (ISD), Carolina Damasio (ISD), George Azevedo (UFRN), lilian lisbon (ISD/UFRN), Reginaldo Freitas Junior (ISD/UFRN) and Samara Maia (ISD).

About Barriguda

In 2015, ISD started the project, through the Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (CEPS), in the Quilombola Community of Capoeiras, in Macaíba (RN). Since 2016, it has had a direct interface with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), through the undergraduate discipline “Cultural Competence in Quilombola Women's Health Care”. Currently, the Barriguda Project is also an extension project of UFRN.

Winners of the 2018 "Projects that Work" competition are from Brazil, India, the United States and Argentina.
