The Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience (IIN-ELS), of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD), receives donations of production inputs (acetate and 3D printer filaments), broken printers – to build new machines – as well as money to purchase inputs that allow for the expansion of the production of 'shield masks' to combat the coronavirus in Rio Grande do Norte. Financial donations are available by bank transfer, credit card, or PayPal (see step-by-step instructions at the end).
Masks, also called 'face shields,' are essential for healthcare professionals to perform procedures with a higher risk of contamination, but they are in short supply given the explosion in demand as the pandemic affects the world.
IIN-ELS/ISD began production on March 24 and has already begun donating it to hospitals, emergency services, and maternity wards in Rio Grande do Norte. Leading the project are researchers and students from the Institute's master's program in neuroengineering.
With the equipment currently available – three 3D printers from the ISD Human-Machine Interface laboratory – production capacity has been approximately 50 masks per day.
"Donations to expand this volume can be of any printer, because we removed the motor and other parts to try to assemble others more quickly," says IIN-ELS research coordinator Edgard Morya. "In the case of materials, those interested in donating can contact us at covid19@isd.org.br and we will collect them," adds Morya.
The amounts received and investments made will be published on the ISD website, under the “covid-19” > “Accountability” tab.
The Santos Dumont Institute is a Social Organization linked to the Ministry of Education, headquartered in Macaíba, Rio Grande do Norte, and encompasses, in addition to the IIN-ELS, the Anita Garibaldi Center for Education and Health Research, in the same municipality.
